It’s Still Hot Out There!

The weather service is predicting 80 and low 90 degree temperatures for most of the rest of the month of August.  Here a few tips to help keep your plants less stressed to avoid wilting, sunburn or losing them to the elements.

Give your plants more water. High temperatures cause water to evaporate quickly causing plants to wilt and become sun damaged.   Increasing the amount of water you provide your plants will help!  The best time to water plants is early in the morning when temperatures are lower.  This will help your plants survive in the heat of the day.   Be careful not to over water.  If the soil around your plants is soft and squishy no need to water!

Take a pruning break.   Have sunburned foliage on your plants?  In the heat of the Summer, leave it, don’t prune it.   Those burnt leaves will serve as some shade cover for the rest of the plant.  Wait until the temperature starts to cool down to prune.

Mulching.   The heat also increases the temperature of the ground and that can affect the roots.  Adding a three inch layer of mulch around trees, shrubs and plants will help keep the soil cooler to keep them from drying out too much.

Fertilizing.  In the heat of the Summer your plants are doing everything they can to survive.  Because the plants are using all their energy to stay alive they are unable to absorb fertilizer.  When this happens the fertilizer stays in the soil and can burn your plants.  Forego fertilization until the temperature cools down.
